Make Your High School Years Unforgettable

Life at College

The Greatest Days are #RedBlackWhite

High school is a special time in everyone’s lives. For young men at Maritzburg College, life is defined by the best of boyhood. This is a chance to be young, learn, and feel the fraternity of friendship. It is also a formative time, where the first meaningful marks of identity are carved. Maritzburg College is the perfect setting for boys to go through this time of their lives. Their days are marked with the fun and friendship of school life but, at College, our aim is for this to be some of these boys’ greatest days.

CULTURE

In many ways, an all-boys’ school is a healthy option for high school. Boys are given the freedom to live out their childhoods and become young men alongside friends who become brothers.

The beautiful College campus, with extensive sports fields and exquisite old buildings, become the backdrop to this time. We strike a healthy balance between academic, sport, and cultural life – with top facilities for boys to grow curiosity, nurture their interests, and find their place in the school. This builds confidence and marks etchings on character that will be there forever.

Boys find their place – but they are also pushed to explore the boundaries of their potential. In the classroom and in cultural clubs and societies, our highly-proficient staff offers motivation, knowledge, and life experience to encourage critical thinking. Our world-class High Performance Centre is a hub of sports-based and personal physical development. In a traditions-based school like College, doing service to the school means doing service to others and leadership and outreach opportunities exist for all boys.

The Beginning of the College Journey

Each boy’s personal and enriching journey at College begins when, as a 2nd former, he encounters Borver Week and learns the #RedBlackWhite Rites of Passage. It is here that, through shared experiences, the bonds of brotherhood begin to form. There is so much for a College boy to learn – to trust his peers and himself, the often bewildering rich College history and tradition. It is now that he starts to develop his own character and courage. He learns resilience and to live out the school’s core values of honesty, integrity, courage, self-discipline, commitment, and respect. He learns the culture that is embedded in the bricks and mortar of buildings, as well as in the hearts of all College young men.

Part of the Team

College boys have a multitude of possible sporting and cultural activities to choose from. As a junior, they are afforded the opportunity to explore many of these for the first time, benefitting from top-quality facilities and resources. Whether it’s being one of over 400 boys who play rugby and hockey, building the speed and strength needed for water polo and basketball, or learning a musical instrument and joining the band, there are a wealth of options available. It’s here that each boy learns more about himself and his own unique talents and aptitudes. He will learn the fierce passion of competing, the joy and excitement of winning, and the pain and courage needed to overcome defeat.

Academic Focus and Direction

Midway through his College journey, each boy must choose the subjects he will take for matric, and in so doing, starts the process of choosing a future career path. From experiencing a rich and diverse array of excellent learning resources of 20 subject options, with the guidance and support of teaching and counselling staff, he takes the next important step on his College journey. He will write tests and examinations and complete projects and assignments as he hones his academic focus and direction, opening his mind to the diverse working world that awaits.

Leadership

In his senior years at College, a boy becomes a young man of stature. He takes on roles of servant leadership with added responsibility, learning how to mentor and guide others. He learns patience, the challenge of self-sacrifice, the pride that comes from leading a winning team, and to manage defeat with grace. As his time at College draws to a close, for each College young man there is a “running out of time” as the grains of #RedBlackWhite sand slip through the hourglass. Now, each day and hour are precious, with the need and opportunity to give back to College and be a part of its future.

The College Difference

Few schools imbue their pupils with the College sense of identity. This is enduring. From finding his feet in Form 2 to emerging as a well-defined young man in Form 6, College boys wear their school history with a special kind of pride. High school is all about adaptability, new skills and knowledge, and an evolving understanding. Looking back on their time at College, it is our aim that every boy used the structure, traditions, and resources to make these their greatest days.
