Boarding At Maritzburg College

A Boys’ Boarding School Building The Bonds Of Home

Often referred to as the backbone of the school, the boarders at Maritzburg College are a tight-knit group of boys. This home environment within the school often creates a sense of fierce loyalty to the school – one that lasts a lifetime.

The boarding ethos at College is imbued with traditional values that have seen the school flourish for over 150 years – camaraderie, commitment, respect, and honour. The boarding establishment is also the site of College’s pastoral care and mentorship in action. The community of boarders across all age groups balance school and recreational interests with the feeling of home within the progressive BE at College.

The Maritzburg College boarding community aims to be an extended family for every boy. Within this supportive, safe environment, boys embark on the adventures of growing up, building bonds of friendship along the way.

Tradition meets the modern needs of young men at the Maritzburg College boys’ boarding establishment. 45 resident house masters, a well-equipped San, and comfortable dorms and common rooms across the five distinctive houses create a supportive, safe environment for boys to learn, bond, and grow.

The San: Taking Care of Boarders’ Wellbeing

Maritzburg College has a well-equipped, 15-bed Sanatorium to facilitate exceptional care for all our boys. It has been run by a professional nurse for over 25 years. “The San” is manned by two nursing sisters and a staff nurse. There is a nurse on duty in the San 24 hours a day every day of the school year.

Our nursing staff are complemented by two doctors who consult every morning, namely Dr Hugh Akerman (OC), and Dr Tracy Campbell. During the winter sports programme, dedicated specialist doctors give of their time and expertise to carry out rugby duties with us each Saturday. In the event of an emergency, we also have ER24 on speed dial and Mediclinic Hospital just five minutes away.

Catering: Professionally-Prepared, Delicious Meals

At College, we know that food plays a role in feeling at home. A healthy diet is also central to working and living at one’s best. Boarders at Maritzburg College get three wholesome and nutritious meals every day. These are prepared by our in-house team of professional cooks. Meals are designed to meet the dietary needs of these young men, giving them sustenance for their time in the classroom, on the sports field, and during recreational activities.

Our catering team is proficient in tailoring the menu to suit every boy’s specific dietary requirements. Whether boys need a diet specially adapted to his religious needs, health condition, or as part of a physical training programme, the College kitchen is here to support him.

Transport: Borders on the Move

Maritzburg College offers a range of transport options to assist boys and parents with transport to and from the boarding establishment. Where boys need to fly home for the holidays – or to return for the school term – our school bus provides transport to and from the airport as required. We also have buses which collect boys within a radius of Pietermaritzburg.

The school also offers transport to boys with extra-curricular commitments outside the school and this is scheduled on a term-by-term basis. Additionally, where boarders require transport to doctors’ appointments or for other regular or once-off events outside the school, the bus is available by arrangement.

Laundry: Laundry Services at the College BE

Wearing the College uniform is an act of pride. The College laundry keeps boys’ uniforms and clothes looking crisp and neat at all time. The College Boarding Establishment offers a daily laundry service. Linen is also washed weekly.

Laundry is done on-site and clothes are returned folded to each boy on the same day following the morning collection.

Boarding By Year

All Form 2 boys start boarding in Nathan’s. They are introduced to College’s ethos by experienced house staff and prefects. In this protective environment, they learn the ropes as juniors.

Boys then proceed as Third Formers to one of the three senior houses – the famous Clark’s, Hudson’s, or Shepstone’s, where they will remain until the end of their Form 5 year, gaining a few privileges along the way.

If he is selected to be a prefect at the end of his Form 5 year, a boy will remain in his house for his Form 6 year. The rest of the Sixth Formers re-join all their old friends from Nathan’s days in Elliott House for their final year at the school where they enjoy purpose-built facilities, adult routines, and a range of privileges.
