In the wake of a terrible tragedy the Maritzburg College Class of ’93 have rallied behind the establishment of a scholarship fund in honour of fallen classmate, Gareth Roberts.
Gareth was killed outside his house in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday 29 February 2020 when a driver lost control of a vehicle and struck him whilst he was tidying up the remains of a tree on his pavement.
Gareth’s senseless and untimely death has placed a heavy burden on his wife, Cheryl, and their three children. Gareth and Cheryl’s twin sons, Matthew and Michael, started at College as new 2nd Formers in January this year.
Through the emotion and heartbreak of this terrible loss the family have been carried and supported by relatives, friends and members of their church congregation. The Class of ’93 have been inspired to help Cheryl and her children during this tough time and the challenging times that will undoubtedly lie ahead.
As a group of friends and Old Boys the Class of ’93 have taken the initiative to establish the Gareth Roberts’ Scholarship Fund. The immediate focus is to provide the financial resources and support to ensure that Gareth’s dream of seeing both his boys walk the hallways and hallowed fields of Maritzburg College, just as he did almost 30years ago, becomes a reality.
Funds raised from classmates and supporters through this scholarship fund will be used to cover tuition and school related costs at Maritzburg College over the next 5 years.
When the situation demands it a College boy will always rise to the occasion
A number of Class of ’93 Alumni have already committed their support to this appeal and it has already disbursed a payment to the school for outstanding tuition costs for this current year.
Donations to this appeal will be tax deductible in South Africa, the UK and the US as the contributions will be received via the Maritzburg College Foundation.
