Local firm invests in a College education

Local attorney firm Redfern & Findlay recently received recognition from the College Foundation for the role they are playing in helping shape the future of young learners at Maritzburg College.

Partners Derek Redfern and Angus Findlay said that the decision to partner with the Foundation in offering an Alan Paton Memorial Scholarship to a deserving young learner was a “no brainer”.

“We are a proudly local firm and Maritzburg College, with its rich history and roots deeply embedded in the Pietermaritzburg fabric, continues to produce young men of the highest calibre. We are honoured and excited to be a part of this initiative and to help shape one young College boy’s future”

The Alan Paton Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the College Foundation in 2016 and aims to address the need to support talented boys whose circumstances prevent them from accessing quality education.

The Fund enables the Foundation to offer academic support to prospective College boys who have displayed a suitable level of academic prowess, a unique character and a willingness to immerse themselves in the “College experience” but whose families are in need of financial assistance.

“This is an exciting partnership where we get to be active participants – not just financial donors as with so many other organisations”

The Alan Paton Memorial Scholarships are awarded according to certain criteria – but in the truest sense of a partnership the donors, in this case Redfern&Findlay Attorneys, are afforded the opportunity to extend or modify these criteria and are also able to offer feedback on the various scholarship candidates shortlisted by the school.

An Alan Paton Scholarship commitment is a 5 year commitment. A commitment by the donor and also by the recipient. Right from the very start of this initiative it was important to bring an element of sustainability to this programme.

As the mother of one of our Alan Paton Scholarship recipients noted: ” …too often boys are offered bursaries and scholarships at schools for a year or two and then the help stops. With this support we know that our son’s education and future is in good hands. All he needs to do now is work hard and make us proud”.

The College Foundation is extremely grateful to Redfern&Findlay Attorneys, and other local businesses, who have made this significant and life-changing commitment.

Together we can help change lives and shape futures.
