The Midlands’ branch of the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association hosted their annual Golf Day on Friday 19th October at the Victoria Country Club in Pietermaritzburg.
After a week of inclement weather the golfers, sponsors and guests awoke to a bright and sunny spring day – perfect weather for golf! And the players did not disappoint! Some outstanding scores were tallied at the end of play with a very close finish between the top 3 teams!
The winners of the day were presented with the Midlands’ Golf Day Trophy by the chairman of the Midlands’ branch, Mr Grant Reed.
Congratulations to Graham Kippen, Andrew Blakeway, Greg Ripley-Evans and Clive Cole on some high-scoring golf! We look forward to welcoming you gentlemen back next year in defence of the title!
Runners-up on the day was the team of Mike Eglington, Brad White, Tom Haines and Ian Morrow with Hermann Goslett, Steve Herbert, Matt Strydom and Andrew Soden coming in in 3rd place.
What was different this year was that the Midlands’ Old Boys “adopted” the College Foundation’s #BigBasher appeal as the charity or cause they wanted to support through the hosting of this day.
The #BigBasher campaign is an initiative by the College Foundation to raise funding to help College boys in need purchase much needed school uniform items or to replace blazers or other essentials that may have been outgrown over the years. The support is extended to new boys joining College for the first time and also to existing College boys.

Through the generous support of the players and sponsors the Midlands’ Old Boys have raised R 19 278 towards this worthy appeal. This translates into being able to help 12 boys with a full basher commitment!
We would like to take a moment to thank the following sponsors for their support in making this day possible:
A special part of the day was the opportunity to recognise the recent performances of College Old Boy and SA Golfer, Malcolm Mitchell (OC2013), who joined us for a day out on the course.
Malcolm was presented with an Old Boys’ blazer by Grant Little, President of the Old Boys’ Association, and Grant Reed, Chairman of the Midlands’ branch.
As Old Boys we are extremely proud of Malcolm’s golfing successes to date and wish him all the best for what is undoubtedly a bright golfing future!
The reminiscing, catching up with old friends and recapping the day’s best shots carried on until late in the night!
Thank you to the Midlands’ branch for a superb day out and to the team at the Victoria Country Club for hosting our College supporters!
